Offering is a homage to my dad who passed away in 2008. Painting was inspired by alters or remembrance tables often set in Cambodian homes with bowls of fruit, snacks, beverages followed by lighting incense sticks and offering prayers to honor those who've passed. The box of incense sticks on the left panel is one of many brands popular with Khmer families. The right panel depicts a collection of my dad's favorite things including persimmons, durian fruit, Budweiser, Dr. Pepper, and pandan gelatin dessert.
Packaging design from the 1980s-90s is a main source of inspiration for me. For example, the designs of the Budweiser and Dr. Pepper cans are from this era, favorite brands of my dad's when I was growing up. Also, the packaging of the box of incense sticks is also from this era.
The composition of the work was improvised without any underlying drawing. I find working in this way gives me creative freedom to experiment and creates a sense of play. –Artist statement
