"This was painted horizontally; from the studio in Oaxaca, Mexico where I was working. I brought the canvas outside to let the rainy season prepare it. . .warm drops wet the canvas to soaking. Under a roof, then; painting in and out of the drying time, spreading and condensing. Deer Dust records this permeable surface; a state of mind where skins, bones, ligaments, images and songs don't end at the edge of the page but seep across borders."
“It is Oaxaca that the intertwined forms (lines, roots, routes, intersections) that have preoccupied me --- and their kelp and their DNA and their visceral Seattle dreadlocks --- first condensed into antlers as deer began to take over my dreams."
“Deer Dust can be seen as it was painted: from (and towards) all directions. Deer Dust’s steady gaze acknowledges these animals that, in that region, accompany souls to the right place, after death (so they don’t get lost). And Northwest deer whose radar beeps from antler-points. The painting also honors the process of thought-in-action called dreams/called poetry/called dance/ and the absorbent big mind inside which we all dwell --- when we’re at home.” –Artist statement
