The Renaissance view of pictorial space was that the frame of the picture was a window, and the artist created an illusion of space that seemed to open out to the distant horizon. In the last century, painters have acknowledged that there is no deep space in painting, only paint on a flat canvas. That is, after all, a more realistic view of what painting is. But there will always by those like Kubo who want you to look far away through the window he has created.
