Robert Sperry (1927-1998) received a B.F.A. in 1953 from The Art Institute of Chicago and a M.F.A. in 1955 from the University of Washington where he taught from 1955 – 82. Awards include a Honors Program Award from the King County Arts Commission, a Gold Metal from International Academy of Ceramics, and was an elected Member to American Craft Council of Fellows. Part painting, all ceramic, this work is typical of Mr. Sperry's work. He perfected the technique of painting ceramic tiles with white slip (semi-fluid clay) before firing them in a kiln. Here the crackle and crawl glaze explodes from the clay surface.
