Cathedral

This drawing was inspired by the Duomo in Milan. If you've seen it, you know that it's a building covered in designs, statuary, architectural detail, flying buttresses and spectacular stained glass windows. The surface almost vibrates.  Instead of a likeness, Jones resorts to a series of nervous, quick gestures to render an impression of the place -- more about its energy than its masonry.  The artist is expressing a feeling of the building solely through his rapid mark making.
