Leo Kenney (1925-2001) was inspired by Eastern art and philosophy, as were the other Northwest School painters. Initially, he was influenced by Symbolist and Surrealist art and literature, but later developed a mature style of transcendental abstraction. The mandala that Kenney created here as a Western version, is usually a geometric design used in Oriental art and religion to represent the universe and an object for meditation. His life and work are the epitome of visionary reclusiveness so characteristic of the Northwest's most original talents, a creative persona both revered and disparaged by opposing camps of thought..
