The Gem of Appearance

Leo Kenney (1925-2001) was inspired by Eastern art and philosophy, as were the other Northwest School painters.  Initially, he was influenced by Symbolist and Surrealist art and literature, but later developed a mature style of transcendental abstraction.  The mandala that Kenney created here as a Western version, is usually a geometric design used in Oriental art and religion to represent the universe and an object for meditation.
