Born in Barbados, West Indies, Gwen's memories are the blue sea, the scent of flowers and the warm sun. She came to America with her family when she was seven and studied art at Howard University in the early 30s. Besides her husband, Jacob Lawrence who was her primary influence and support, the most important individual in her life was Augusta Savage, the early feminist, black nationalist and forceful teacher in Gwen's early New York WPA days.
“The horse is to me powerful and beautiful. Then standing, running, racing every movement is poetry. So I tried to capture that beauty and powerfulness on paper, canvas, and whatever, even when the horse is not in my view.” –Artist statement
