James Allen creates book excavations using found books. The books remain bound as a relief sculpture is created by cutting away pages to reveal the content in unexpected ways. The subjects of exploration are as countless as the books available but some favorites include nature, newspapers, architecture, medicine, and encyclopedias. He lives and works in Portland, Oregon. His book excavations can be found in many special collections, including University of Puget Sound, UCLA, Baylor University, and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
