For a decade I have been photographing the 3 abandoned forts that protected the Puget Sound during WWI and WWII. My intent was to capture them entwined with the rich landscape, bringing to mind the vision of fortresses filled with American soldiers. When I photographed Fort Casey, Altered Landscape, I was trying to capture a glimpse of the cannon with the large shrub and overgrown yellow grass. I wanted the cannon to be diminished and overtaken by the landscape. Seeing the moon in the image was a bonus. –Artist statement
