This small painting is part of a series of images inspired by the music, dance, and costume designs of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, considered shocking and revolutionary upon its debut in 1913. I am attempting an interrogation of what we call “primitivism”, because when that term is applied to other cultures by the West, it is nearly always a fiction created by Colonialist perspectives. At the same time, let us also consider that the embrace of those aesthetics by artists in the 20th and 21st century have played no small part in allowing an Anti-Colonialist narrative to thrive. –Artist statement
