The vertical rock formations are basalt columns, common to the canyons of the scabland region of eastern WA and OR. The title was the term used by coal miners in the early 1900's for being blacklisted by their employer. A miner was sent down the canyon if thought to be a union sympathizer, or openly critical of their employers policies and working conditions. –Artist statement
