The Mirror Quilt photographs are made with a handcrafted camera lens. Instead of quilting with fabric, I cut glass mirrors to make a traditional 8-pointed star quilt squares. I glue the mirrors onto a fabric backing. I take the quilt to different people's homes, hang it on a stand, and let it gather color from the surroundings. I then photograph the surface of the quilt. The Mirror Quilt photographs are, like quilts, portraits of the individuals who made them. JK was photographed in my father's woodshop and reflects objects related to some of his favorite pastimes: woodworking, bicycling with family, fishing, and practicing judo.
