Born in Brooklyn in 1932, artist Mel Katz left the New York in 1963 and moved to Portland where he was instrumental in energizing the community art scene. In the '70s he helped found the Portland Center for the Visual Arts with Portland artists Michele Russo and Jay Backstrand. Katz taught at Portland State University until he retired in 1998. As an artist, he works in both two and three-dimensions. His sculptures express clean, geometric lines and bold colors, as this piece evidences.
