Starting in the nineteenth century when photography became the common method of rendering reality, painting became less about the scene being depicted and more about the act of painting. The gesture and the nature of the materials became increasingly important and making pictures became less so. This is not a painting of a place or a thing.. though it might suggest a landscape. It is about how the color and viscosity of the paint and the gesture of the artist combine to express a certain state of mind.
