Helmi Juvonen (1903-85) received formal art training at Cornish College of Art. In the 1940's, she studied lithography and linoleum cut prints, and completed a large body of work during this prolific period. Her intellect, wit and whimsy endeared her to many, including Mark Tobey with whom she became obsessed. She placed his likeness in many of her artworks, indulging her fantasy. This painting is one of such expressions of idolatry with him. Helmi's work has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions in the Northwest.
